Keeping display names consistent and appropriate is a small but important part of maintaining a well-run server. /nickname lets you update or reset any member’s server nickname in seconds — no manual profile digging required.

Description

The /nickname command changes a member’s server-specific nickname — the name displayed for them in your server, separate from their global Discord username. If you provide a nickname value, that becomes their new display name in your server. If you omit the nickname parameter, Burger Bot resets the member’s nickname and reverts their display name back to their default Discord username. Changes are server-local and do not affect the member’s account on any other server.

Usage

/nickname @username BurgerFan2025

Parameters

user
@mention
required
The server member whose nickname you want to change or reset. Must be an @mention of a current member of your server.
nickname
string
The new nickname to assign to the member. Discord nicknames can be up to 32 characters long. If this parameter is omitted, the member’s nickname is reset to their default Discord username.

Permissions Required

RoleAccess
Moderator or higher✅ Can change member nicknames
Regular members❌ No access

Example Usage

Set a new nickname for a member:
/nickname @ChaosGremlin FriendlyGremlin
Reset a member’s nickname to their Discord username:
/nickname @ChaosGremlin
Rename a member with spaces in the nickname:
/nickname @ChaosGremlin The Reformed One
Burger Bot cannot change the nickname of members whose highest role is equal to or above the role of the moderator running the command. This is a Discord permission hierarchy restriction. Server owners also cannot have their nicknames changed by a bot.
/nickname is especially useful for enforcing display name policies — for example, requiring members to use their real names in professional or academic servers, or renaming members who use symbols and invisible characters that make them difficult to @mention. Reset nicknames to enforce the policy without any back-and-forth.
